The Future of Pharma is Gearless, Silent, and Precise

Pharmaceutical production demands zero tolerance for error. A single contamination event, an unexpected downtime, or unstable torque at a critical dosing stage can compromise an entire batch — and in some cases, patient safety. Yet many facilities still rely on conventional geared motor systems that were never designed with these stakes in mind.

The EMF Motor SQME Series was built to change that.

What Is the SQME Series?

The SQME is a permanent magnet synchronous torque motor — a direct drive solution engineered specifically for low-speed, high-torque applications. Unlike conventional systems that pair an AC motor with a gearbox and a water-cooling circuit, the SQME eliminates both entirely. No transmission components. No coolant infrastructure. No moving parts that don't need to be there.

The result is a motor that delivers constant torque and speed regulation from as low as 0.1 rpm all the way to rated speed — a capability that is particularly critical in pharmaceutical mixing, dosing, and extrusion processes where product consistency is non-negotiable.

Why Gearboxes Are a Problem in Pharma

Gearboxes are mechanical compromises. They introduce backlash, transmission losses, lubrication requirements, and wear over time. In a pharmaceutical environment, they also introduce contamination risk — gear oil leaks and particulate generation are real concerns in cleanroom-adjacent settings.

Water cooling systems compound the problem. They require chemical treatment, flow and temperature monitoring, dedicated piping, controllers, and cabling. According to EMF Motor's technical data, the cooling system alone can consume an additional 0.5 kW just to run the pump — energy that contributes nothing to your process. And when a water-cooling system fails, it doesn't just stop cooling. It can cause significant damage to the motor itself.

The SQME's answer is straightforward: remove the problem at its source.

Four Pillars of Precision

Direct Drive — zero transmission losses. The SQME connects directly to the load with no gearbox, no belts, and no intermediate drivetrain. What the drive commands, the shaft delivers — instantly and precisely. This also means there are fewer components to fail, fewer alignment tolerances to maintain, and no gearbox oil to manage.

No water cooling — by design. The SQME operates without any liquid cooling circuit. Its advanced motor principle and Ultra Premium efficiency mean it generates far less heat than conventional alternatives, making forced cooling unnecessary. Protection level is IP 54 as standard, with thermal protection via PTO. The compact design (500 mm height, 500 mm width for the SQME 250-500, versus 900 mm height and 620 mm width for a comparable geared system) saves significant floor space as well.

Silent and vibration-free operation. Extremely low torque ripple is one of the defining characteristics of the SQME design. In practice this means smoother product flow, better homogeneity in mixing and dosing applications, and a quieter working environment for operators. In pharma, where vibration can affect sensitive instruments and processes, this is a genuine operational advantage.

Ultra precision from 0.1 rpm. The SQME maintains stable torque and speed across its full operating range — including at the very low speeds required for delicate pharmaceutical processes. High efficiency is sustained across the full speed and torque range, not just at rated conditions.

The Numbers Behind the Technology

EMF Motor's case study comparing a conventional 45 kW IE3 geared motor against the SQME 250-500 at equivalent power makes the efficiency argument concrete.

The conventional system — an AC motor running at 1,475 rpm through a 1:9.64 gearbox — achieves a theoretical output of 2,809 Nm at 153 rpm. Motor efficiency is 94.2%. But that figure excludes the energy consumed by the forced cooling fan motor (0.13 kW) and the heat exchanger pump motor (0.37 kW) — an additional 0.5 kW running continuously.

The SQME 250-500 delivers the same 45 kW and the same 2,809 Nm at 153 rpm — with no cooling system losses, and a smaller physical footprint. At 150 rpm under continuous load (340 days, 24 hours), the energy savings reach approximately 4.5–5 kW — translating to over 12,500 Euro per year in energy costs at 0.3 Euro/kWh.

Across the full speed and torque range in the efficiency diagram, the SQME torque motor consistently outperforms both water-cooled standard torque motors and AC geared motors — especially at partial loads, where real-world pharma processes typically operate most of the time.

Technical Specifications at a Glance

The SQME series is available in frame sizes 100, 132, 160, 200, 250, and 315. Torque output reaches up to 13,000 Nm. The motor operates on 110 V, 220 V, 400 V, and 460 V supply voltages, with delta-star switching enabling 230 V / 400 V flexibility within the same unit. Number of poles ranges from 66 to 110 depending on the frame size.

Integrated thrust bearings are specified per model: the 29412 series for SQME 100 and 132, 29416 for SQME 160, 29420 for SQME 200, 29428 for SQME 250, and 29432 for SQME 315. The hollow shaft design allows the extruder screw to mount directly into the shaft hole at the thrust bearing end — a clean, compact integration with no adapter flanges required.

Feedback options include Hiperface, EnDat encoder, and sensorless control for certain driver configurations. Thermal protection is PTO as standard, with PT100, PT1000, PTC, and KTY84 available optionally.

Applications in Pharmaceutical Production

The SQME's characteristics map directly onto the most demanding pharma process requirements: dosing systems requiring precise low-speed delivery, mixing and blending where torque consistency determines batch quality, extrusion for solid dosage forms, and winding-unwinding operations for packaging lines. The same motor platform also covers blow moulding, injection, calenders, and puller (caterpillar) applications — making it a single technology investment applicable across a full production line.

A Smarter, More Sustainable Production Line

The pharmaceutical industry is under growing pressure to reduce its energy footprint while simultaneously raising quality standards. These two goals are often treated as being in tension. The SQME demonstrates they don't have to be.

By eliminating the gearbox and the water-cooling system, you remove maintenance overhead, reduce failure points, and recover energy that was previously lost to heat and mechanical inefficiency. The Ultra Premium efficiency rating — exceeding IE5 and pushing toward IE6 standards — is not a marketing claim. It is the measurable consequence of a better motor principle applied consistently across the full operating range.

Less infrastructure. Less maintenance. Less energy. Better precision. That is the case for the SQME Series.
